I've had  fine straight hair my whole life.  I can remember setting it with those old foam curlers and trying to sleep on them overnight.  Talk about uncomfortable!  Well, the good news is that Melissa Goodsell has a tutorial  on her One Crafty Mumma blog showing you how to create rag curls using freezer bags.  Too bad they didn't have freezer bags when I was a kid.

This is a pretty rough guide - I used one freezer bag for Bella's curls but if you want thicker curls experiment and use a whole stack of freezer bags at once (thanks for the tip Kama).
