Here's what Dana had to say about her tutorial: if you listen to a raw recording of even the best singer performing, it doesn't always sound great. what you hear on the radio is fluffed up singing... added re-verb, echoes, etc... they all make you sound really good.
same thing for movies. add color, take color away, add intense music, etc... it make a HUGE difference between a bad LB movie and a record making LOTR {i don't know if they actually set any records, but they should have} :)
Same thing goes for photos. even the best photos are usually touched up or edited in some way (not always). but, since we are deep in the wonderful world of "digital everything", you don't necessarily have to be a perfect photographer to have a great photo. the key is to envision the possibilities and to be willing to play around a bit.
it certainly does help to have a great "eye" for things... to know which backgrounds will work better in black and white or color pictures, or to know what angles are best and lighting... lighting is SO important. but really if your willing to take a million (and i DO mean a million) shots, then you'll start to learn what works and what doesn't.
BUT if all you want is for a couple keepsake photos to really stand out from all the rest, all it takes is a little trial and error with a photo editing program. Fortunately, you don't have to be a genius to use the editing options in Picasa. sure you can do a crazy number of awesome things in Photo-shop or GIMP or whatever other program there is, but for the average Jo, like me (I am not nor will i ever claim to be, a professional photographer), Picasa will do nicely {GIMP is nice though once you learn it and it's also free}.
I'm going to show you how i edited a not-so-great-at-first-glance photo.
ok, so here is what we're starting with...
