Chinese Coin Quilt by Niki McNamara

So I've decided to start a Chinese Coin quilt for my 13 y.o. son Alex. Would you like to make a Chinese Coin quilt with me!? GREAT! The first step is to iron your fabrics (pick lots of different colors) and cut them. Each 'coin' will be 5 inches wide and you can make them as tall as you want. I like to make them no more than 3 inches tall. Vary the size, for a scrappier look. So the pieces will be say 1"x5", 2"x5" and so on. You will take all your coins once cut and mix them up. There is no order for the coins (the way I do it). To me, the scrappier the better. Sew along the 5 inch sides piece by piece. Making long chains of the coins. Make the quilt as long as you want. Between the strips of coins you will add a solid (or one that looks like it) fabric. Pick light or dark, no matter. Sew along the sides all the way down. Add borders and finish off quilt as desired (tie or quilt). There you have it! A great scrappy quilt. Here is one I've already made and the picture at the top shows the coins already cut, ready for sewing. Have fun. IF and when you get your tops/quilts done, send me pictures via my email (link at top) and I will post all the coin quilts. Let's have fun with this. Use brights, batiks, etc. Mix it up! What fun! For some great beginner books on quilting you can visit my Amazon store HERE. Lots of quilting books to chose from

Ok, so by now you should have all your coins cut, sewn together in strips and pressed (ironed). You can go ahead and cut the sashing strips however wide you want, I chose 2.5 inches. My next step will be borders. My first border will be the same 2.5 inch fabric as my sashing. I will then add a 2nd border. This border will be a bit wider than the 2.5, say I'll make it 4 inches finished, so make sure to cut it 4.5 inches (before sewing). Make a statement with your border! Have fun with it! Here are 2 pictures of my top so far. Remember, if you are making this wonderful quilt with me, send me your finished top pictures. I will post here for all to oooh and aaaahhhh over! Happy Quilting!

I'm so excited. Got my Chinese Coin quilt top done and I will meet with the LAQ (Long Arm Quilter) on Friday to hand over my top and pieced backing to be quilted. Can't wait to get this one back to show all of you the final result! Anyone else plugging along good on their Chinese Coin quilts? Remember, send pics! I'll post 'em!

I am so pleased the way this one came out. It is a large lap sized quilt for my son. The Chinese Coin Quilt is now complete! I made a scrappy binding as well.
